What to Expect on Your First Editorial Shoot

If you've never done a real editorial shoot, the nerves are normal — everyone has them the first time, and they wear off faster than you'd think. Here's how the day actually goes, so you walk in knowing what's coming.

Before you arrive

We'll have agreed on the look, the wardrobe, and the comfort level ahead of time, so nothing on the day is a surprise. Come prepped: skin and hair sorted, wardrobe options in a bag, references if we discussed any. Eat something first. Long shoots on an empty stomach show up in your face.

The first twenty minutes

The start is always a little stiff, for everyone. We don't jump straight to the strongest frames — we warm up. Easy poses, simple direction, a few test frames to dial in the light. By the time we're moving, you've forgotten to be self-conscious. That's the point of easing in.

How direction works

I direct throughout — you're not left guessing. It's small, specific adjustments: chin down slightly, weight to the back foot, chase the light with your eyes, breathe out on the frame. You don't need to know poses coming in. Your job is to take the cue and let me handle whether it's working.

If something isn't landing, I'll say so and we'll change it. No frame is precious. We shoot a lot to keep a little.

Movement beats posing

Still, held poses tend to look held. The frames that work usually come out of motion — shifting weight, turning through a look, a real reaction rather than a frozen one. I'll often have you keep moving while I shoot the moments in between. Trust that and don't freeze up waiting for a "click."

You stay in control

You can call for a break, check the back of the camera, or adjust the comfort level at any point, and you never have to explain why. A shoot where you feel in control is a shoot that produces better images. That's not a courtesy — it's how the good frames happen.
