What Agencies Actually Look for in Digitals
It helps to understand digitals from the other side of the desk. When a booker opens your digitals to send to a client, they're checking one thing above all: does the person match the image? Everything a good set does serves that. Here's what they're actually reading.
Accuracy first
A booker is staking their credibility on you showing up looking like your digitals. Anything that obscures the truth — a filter, heavy retouching, a flattering trick of light — works against you, because it makes the set unreliable. The cleanest, most honest digitals are the ones that get sent out. This is the opposite of your editorial images, and it trips people up.
Your natural state
Minimal or no makeup, hair down and simple, real light. Bookers are reading bone structure, proportion, skin, and how you photograph without help. That's information they can't get from a styled image, which is exactly why digitals exist.
The standard angles
Straight on, both profiles, from the back, a natural smile, and hands. It looks basic, and it's meant to — those frames let a client map you accurately from a few images. A set that skips them is a set a booker has to apologize for.
Simple, fitted clothing
A tank and fitted jeans, a slip — something that shows your actual line and proportion. Baggy or busy clothing hides the very thing the client is trying to assess.
Current
Recent, and matching how you look now. After any real change — cut, color, anything — the set needs updating. Old digitals that don't match you today are worse than none.
What gets a set skipped
Filters, heavy edits, dramatic lighting, a full face of makeup, group photos, and anything obviously old. Each one reads the same way to a booker: something's being hidden. In digitals, polish looks like a problem.
The quiet truth
Digitals aren't where you compete on glamour — that's what your editorial set is for. Digitals compete on trust. The most honest, best-lit, accurate set wins, every time.
When I shoot a test, I make your digitals to this spec — clean, current, and formatted so a booker won't second-guess them — alongside the editorial set that shows what you do. Reach out through the contact page if you need a set that holds up.
